Organic Gardens For Schools
Why do schools in Malawi need organic gardens?
Northern Malawi is facing a serious food insecurity crisis. This region is one of the poorest in the country and has been affected by droughts and floods, as well as a lack of access to food and resources. As a result, many people in the region are facing malnutrition and are living in extreme poverty. Food aid is only a temporary solution, food forests brings long term security.
Rural Northern Malawi, Central Africa, has suffered severe deforestation, climate change and food insecurity. Here pupils spend 8 hours at school without food and some don't even have breakfast. This is why we have started an initiative to create organic gardens in schools, so pupils can learn how to grow their own food, so children no longer have to go hungry at School.
Starting in 3 schools we are creating organic gardens as ecological teaching aids that provide fresh healthy organic food for the children. It will also act as a demonstration site for the wider communities to learn how to apply simple & sustainable agroforestry methods
The gardens will be living seed banks, growing as many varieties of fruits as possible to preserve the strains and save the seeds which will be made available for the community. It will also be a native plant repository so pupils will be able to familiarize themselves with edible weeds, local pollinator plants and medicinal plants. Thanks to our regenerative members we have started to create organic garden in the 3 schools, our plan is to extend this project to more schools but we need your help to make this happen!
