Reforesting Malawi Africa
Lowani has planted 2.5 million trees in Malawi he is also a spoke-person and advocate for the local food movement, helping his community sustainably become self sufficient, with local farmers markets and teaching kids about organic growing at school, where he has installed gardens which have been funded by our members and subscribers.
Now we are going to expand these projects thanks to the support of our members. Starting with a quarter acre piece of land, new reforestation efforts are under way, a nursery is up and running, next is to install piping to bring water to this area of the forest to help the saplings take root, eventually they wont need irrigation but to ensure success irrigation is necessary, on the slopes Lowani and his team have dug trenches and swales, in order to hold water and prevent erosion.
The location is in a remote area of Malawi, it’s in the highlands where native pines exist. Pines have been chopped down for fuel for fires and cooking. With deforestation comes erosion and desertification, not only that pines attract rain and help water to slowly infiltrate into the aquifers and store it there.
